Chartered Engineer (CEng)
Focus: Innovation and Novelty
- Develops solutions to complex engineering problems using new or existing technologies in novel ways.
- Often operates without established codes or standards because the technology is too new.
- Academic benchmark: Master's degree (MEng or BEng + MSc).
Incorporated Engineer (IEng)
Focus: Implementation and Management
- Maintains and manages applications of current and developing technology.
- Applies established codes, standards, and practices to solve practical problems.
- Academic benchmark: Bachelor's degree (BEng/BSc).
What happens if I pick the wrong one?
If you apply for CEng but your evidence shows IEng-level work (e.g., you managed a complex project using standard methods but didn't innovate), the interview panel will likely offer you IEng registration instead of failing you completely. However, it is much better to target the correct registration from day one.
